    ROMEO Y JULIETA

Named after William Shakespeare’s tragic lovers, the origins of Romeo y Julieta as a Havana date back to 1875.

The brand rose to international fame during the early years of the 20th Century under the direction of Don ‘Pepin’ Rodriguez, a talented promoter who was amongst the first to recognise the power of the cigar band. During his heyday no less than 20,000 different bands were used in the production of cigars.

Winston Churchill became a devotee of the brand and following his visit to Havana in 1946, his name has not only been commemorated on a band, but it has also served to describe the marque’s most famous size – Romeo y Julieta Churchills.

Romeo y Julieta’s balanced and aromatic blend of selected filler and binder leaves from the Vuelta Abajo zone make it the classic medium bodied Havana.

Today Romeo y Julieta is as well known around the world as ever and offers one of the widest range of tripa larga, totalmente a mano – long filler, totally handmade – sizes of any Havana brand.

    PETIT CHURCHILL

2012 saw the arrival of the fourth of Romeo's famous Churchill line. Petit Churchills, joining the original, Short and Wide Churchills to offer a range of heavy girth vitolas for all occasions.

Great Little number. Very smooth, easy to draw, and easy to light with bags of smoke. Soft, subtly creamy flavors throughout. Began to burn quite hot towards that last third. Took just under 30 minutes to smoke so would be great during the work day. Easily my favorite RyJ to date. Very similar in taste to the Partagas Serie D No. 6.

I am new to the world of cigars - this is my first review! The R&J Petit Churchill is the first cigar I have smoked that wasn't the regular corona shape; perhaps the slightly larger gauge was the reason I found this one a little more difficult to get a good light. Once lit it burnt well, I think I only had to relight twice, both times were really just precautionary re-heats. I enjoyed the pre-light draw, a lot of flavour and a very easy pull - Although I didn't do this on my previous smokes, so I have nothing to compare it to! The first half was pleasant enough, very smooth and with a raisin flavour coming through. I don't have a particularly sensitive palate, so it was nice to be able to pick up a bit of flavour with this smoke. There was occasionally a slightly herbaceous taste creeping in around the half-way point. Finally, there were mild coffee flavours - the last third being the most enjoyable. I'd thought that the Petit Churchill would be very spicy on the lips, but it was surprisingly mild in that sense. All in all an enjoyable 40-45 minute smoke, although I was expecting slightly more bite, I would definitely try again.

The draw was quite tight initially, but loosened up about halfway through. Otherwise construction was good. Flavour was consistent, not unpleasant but certainly kept things on the simple side.
