Description Ref # NRBalkan

It all started in Kendal, England in 1792. Thomas Harrison was a successful snuff maker. Jane Harrison Thomas’s daughter, eloped in 1838 to a young man of Kendal, Samuel Gawith. When Mr. Harrison died in 1841, he left the business to his daughter and son-in-law, and over the years Samuel Gawith continued to prosper.

In 1865, Samuel Gawith died prematurely at the age of 48. His eldest son, also called Samuel, was only 22 and his father had wisely left the firm in the hands of three trustees, one of whom was this son. The elder trustee was Henry Hoggarth, a boyhood friend and neighbour in Lowther Street who had founded a Kendal firm of land agents and surveyors.

In 1878, Samuel and his younger brother, John Edward Gawith decided amicably to go their separate ways and so the two Gawith firms came into being. Samuel took over the snuff mill and business at Mealbank, and John stayed on in Lowther Street.

The firm in Lowther Street went through some troubled times but, in 1887, a new partnership was founded between Samuel’s youngest brother, William Henry, and Henry Hoggarth junior, to be known as Gawith Hoggarth Company.

Gawith Hoggarth Company continued to manufacture tobacco products and snuff at the Lowther Street works until 2009, when they moved to new business premises.

Then in 2015, the two companies returned back together under one roof.

Tasting Notes

A beautifully formed dark flake of pressed Virginias with a generous helping of best Latakia.

Balkan's appearance encourages the pipe-smoker to pack up, relax and enjoy the 'smokey' intense flavour of Balkan flake. You will be amazed to see the copious amount of smoke this tobacco can produce.

A medium strength smoke with cool and smooth characteristics.

I cant believe its taken me this long to try this tobacco (pipe smoker for well over 30 years). I always assumed this would be too strong for my tastes, but this may actually be the smoothest, best balanced tobacco (Latakia blend or otherwise) I have ever tried. When makers describe their products as slow burning and cool smoking, this is exactly how I always expected them to be, but they so rarely were. Medium strength, with enough Latakia to keep things interesting, but not so much that you couldnt use this as an all-day smoke. Easy to rub out, and not too much moisture. Added to my favourites, and will probably be my go-to tobacco from now on. Cant rate this highly enough. Try it yourself, you might just agree.

A smooth and light smoke that absolutely earns its ‘creamy’ name. A very understated but solid smoke that is as enjoyable as it is subtle. The smoke is thick and of Course - Creamy! Robust enough to be able to smoke fast but best enjoyed slow. Depending on your preference of how fine you like to rub it out, burns slow. I like to leave it just thicker than a ribbon cut and loosely pack the bowl. This forces me to sip it slow, ensuring a cool smoke. I would highly recommend this for beginners who are thinking of trying a flake cut!

Following recommendations from others after my enjoyment of SG Navy Flake, I was then encouraged to try SG 1792 Flake. The flake is dark and smells very similar to SG Navy Flake with the notable omission of alcohol in the nose. I rubbed this down and allowed it to dry for several hours and then smoked it in my Peterson Derry Rustic Straight 106 Pipe. This is a strong tobacco flavour from the start, it is similar to SG Navy Flake but with the alcohol taste removed. It is lovely and strong (assuming you like the taste of tobacco) and probably one of the purest pipe tobaccos that I sampled. It was slow burning (3/4 of the bowl lasted 1 hour and 15 minutes) but I enjoyed it so much I smoked every last drop of tobacco in the bowl. It was strong in flavours but gave no bight to the tongue or the back of the throat. After lighting it required two more relights (nothing to write home about). It reminded me of sitting in a room with a peat fire burning, brought back memories there. The smoke it produced was thick and to my nose pleasant, but to a non smoker probably would have been quite offensive. The smoke output was quite large in volume and burned consistently throughout the duration of the pipe smoke. Overall I loved this pipe tobacco, but it is certainly not for everyone. I personally think that the Navy Flake edged it slightly as I enjoyed the notes of alcohol in the taste, but other than that I couldnt separate them on taste and enjoyability. Overall an excellent smoke that Im glad I decided to sample. If you like a full flavoured and full bodied pipe tobacco then I highly recommend this. After reading a few online reviews I would say ignore the horror stories online and decide for yourself.

As you open the tin, both excited and nervous for this flake you are greeted by the whiff of whiskey, and a good whiff at that. It took a while to light but when lit it's worth the effort that got you there. At first it is smokey, peaty and has a slight pepper taste but it passes quickly as it smooths out into the virginia flake it is, accompanied by the single malt whiskey flavouring you desire. It is amazingly unique and unlike anything else. A definite recommendation.

The Balkan flake is admirable with its leathery intake. Some say its fruity while as others, such as me, goes back to being a child and taking cough syrup… But this time it’s in a better form. No bite and smokes well after being dried.
