COHIBA

Cohiba is the flagship brand of Habanos.

It was created in 1966 for President Fidel Castro himself and was made at the then top secret, but now world famous, El LLaguito factory. At first, it was only seen outside Cuba as gifts for heads of state and visiting diplomats.

Since 1982 Cohiba has been available in limited quantities to the open market.

The name is an ancient Taino Indian word for the bunches of tobacco leaves that Columbus first saw being smoked by the original inhabitants of Cuba - the earliest known form of a Habano.

The leaves for Cohiba are the "selection of selection" from the 5 finest Vegas de Primera in San Juan y Martinez and San Luis districts of the Vuelta Abajo zone.

Uniquely amongst Habanos up to three of Cohiba's filler leaves , the seco, ligero and the rare medio tiempo, undergo an additional fermentation in barrels. This unique process produces a special aroma and flavour you will only find in Cohiba.

Tasting Notes

As a result of its strength and excellent blend this cigar has become one of the nine true Robustos. One of the most demanded Havanas in the market, a true gem.

"A dark robusto whose hearty core of spice and earth is beautifully accented by notes of nutmeg and cinnamon that intensify and harmonize on the finish to a very satisfying effect..."

Well what a disappointment! I had been saving this for a special occasion as this was so far my most expensive single cigar purchase. So I saved it for my Silver Wedding Anniversary. Unfortunately the big day/night it was impossible to draw. I tried everything - it lit, but nothing was coming through, it was impossibly tight. So I put it out and picked up a Partagas D instead. The next day I went back to my Cohiba and after some very careful poking with a cocktail stick I managed to get some flow - but it was burnt tasting and bitter - so I had to throw it away. By far my worst cigar experience - I have a Cohiba Siglo II to try so I am hoping that will give me an idea of what the fuss is about, but this Robustos was un-smokable.

A little underwhelming actually. A present. Not a brilliant draw and very insipid, virtually no discernible taste or flavour and halfway through. Maybe this is not a good one, though for £27... I have been smoking Regius though, so maybe these are meant to be light??

I bought this cigar as part of the Cuban Robusto Taster pack, and was my 3rd in said pack. As a newbie to cigar smoking, I was looking forward to this one, being arguably the best Cuban brand. It didnt disappoint. What a beauty. A smooth, even draw, plenty of smoke, but probably a bit strong for me. Another thing I really enjoyed (with a smile on my face), was the fact that I might not be able to afford a huge house, Aston Martin etc. But a working class Northerner can smoke some of the best cigars in the world...just like Winston.

This is my favourite medium size cigar although on the slightly price side for me. They are ideal for the special occasion. I can just finish work on a Friday order a take away and fine red wine and smoke this afterwards. The taste of exceptional, along with the draw and smoke.

Reviewed by Eric Hill (April 2003) Before writing this review, I decided that I should light up one of these sticks to ensure, of course, that my review was as accurate as possible. ;-) Upon first glance at this cigar, one can see that it is a beautifully, well-constructed cigar. It has a medium brown wrapper, with a slightly shiny appearance and smooth texture (although, sometimes a little venous). The cigar has a firm, solid feel in the hand and a light, but pleasant sweet, woody aroma. The draw is perfect upon lighting with a very pleasant smell, which even my fiance appreciates. She usually has a complaint or three about the bouquet! Initially, the cigar has a slightly salty taste. This develops into a rich creamy flavour with hints of leather, spice and coffee, becoming sweeter further into the cigar (for those who appreciate that sort of detail!) However, I spend far too much of my day dissecting the mechanisms of biological phenomena at work, without repeating this when relaxing with a fine cigar and a glass of bourbon (sorry, Aficionados!) This cigar, which rarely requires relighting, burns evenly, producing ample amounts of smoke, and has a firm, grey ash. Cohibas are generally "cool burners"; there is no "tongue burn" or sharpness around the end of the cigar, I could smoke this one until it burnt my fingers. I have often found that after parting with my cigar, and on the morning after, so my fiancée tells me, I suffer dragon breath. There is no such legacy after one of these sticks, they prefer to leave a slightly more subtle aftertaste. Unfortunately, although Cohibas have become one of my favourite brands, I find I cannot afford to purchase them as often as I would like, due to their somewhat excessive cost. If I were to give these cigars a mark out of 10, it would be an 8. They lose one point for their inflated price, and another because sometimes I am left wanting something a little stronger, and more complex, than these medium-flavour cigars. Despite this, I would recommend these cigars to anyone, beginner or those with a more sophisticated palate.
