    HOYO DE MONETERREY

Hoyo de Monterrey owes its origin to the town of San Juan y Martinez, which lies at the heart of the Vuelta Abajo zone. Here the Hoyo de Monterrey plantation, one of the great Vegas de Primera, can be reached through a gate on the town's main square inscribed "Hoyo de Monterrey. Jose Gener. 1960."

"Hoyo" literally means "hole" and in this case describes the low-lying position of the plantation on the fertile banks of San Juan y Martinez river.  Jose Gener, a Spaniard from Tarragona, first used the name of his vega on a brand of Habanos in 1865.

The flavour of Hoyo de Monterrey's blend makes it an attractive choice for those who seek a delicate yet aromatic Habano that is lighter to the taste but with great elegance and complexity.

The brand is renowned for its Double Corona and for the prestigious Epicure series, the No.1 and No.2, to which the longer Epicure Especial was added in 2008. There is also a range of vitolas known as the Le Hoyo Series. These are generally accepted to be slightly stronger and spicier than the brand’s classic range.

All sizes are ‘tripalarga, totalmente a mano’ – long filler, totally handmade using filler and binder leaves from the Vuelta Abajo tobacco zone.

    DOUBLE CORONAS

A mighty cigar with a surprisingly subtle and creamy flavour. It rocketed to stardom when the second issue of Cigar Aficionado rated a late '80s example 99 out of 100. Still a cigar to be reckoned with.

  • Excellent, oily, robust and with powerful flavour and aroma. This is a great smoke. The draw, burn and taste are very good.

"Floral at first, this long cigar draws and burns evenly. It soon develops creamy notes of almond and vanilla, a bit of caramel and a spicy burst of cinnamon. The finish smacks of honey. Complex and sophisticated..."

Reviews

Customers say
Customers generally find this Hoyo de Monterrey Double Coronas to be a long, complex, and rewarding smoke, often praised for its creamy, sweet, and earthy flavors. While many highlight its excellent draw and consistent burn, a notable number of reviewers have experienced issues with tight draws or plugged cigars, suggesting some inconsistency in construction. It's frequently recommended for those who appreciate aging their cigars to unlock its full potential.
Best suited for experienced smokers who appreciate a long, evolving smoke and are willing to age their cigars, or for those who enjoy a milder Cuban with potential for complexity.

Smoked this on my birthday and what a fitting smoke for the occasion! A beautifully wonderful easy going, smooth, yet complex light to medium smoke and an underlying Cuban spirit in the aroma. Cuban cigars are no doubt the best. Ive also come to the conclusion that these longer formats are the best way to enjoy the brand at it best. Over 2 hours burn time of top quality tobacco I strongly reccomend this cigar.

have been trying various cubans- after much enjoyment how found the hoyo de monterrey range the best without any doubt. For a long relaxing smoke the double coronas is an excellent choice - mild but not weak, great draw from start to finish - expensive but great value!

Without doubt the worst cigar Ive ever smoked. It was an effort to keep it going, absolutely nothing relaxing or enjoyable about it. Terrible burn, terrible draw, went out without near constant smoking which destroyed the flavours. Gave up just over half way and lit and immeasurably better RyJ Churchill.

Big boy Doubles like this need time and respect. A stogie to smoke when you got a lovely summer day is perfect. After a few very nasty hot humid days in the Uk we were gifted with a warm but slightly cooler day. The day had a nice cool breeze, warm but cooler and comfortable. I sat in my back garden and lit this bad boy up. The cigar started light with a slightly creamy, oaky taste. Second third it came into its own; more cream, caramel and a slight sweetness that I would describe as a hint of strawberry. One hour in and I realised the cigar had more kick than I thought slightly overdosing on nicotine I needed to slow down some. I took it easier and spread it out with more gaps between draws and walked up and down some. I debated aspects of life, thought bout things in a relaxed pleasant way, solutions to problems work. The final third was a surprise. Most cigars gain intensity at this point but the intensity was not overwhelming. I donÂ’t usually usually enjoy the final third of many cigars but in this case it may have been the most enjoyable part of the cigar the contrast of the tobacco strength and increased complexity with more of that nice creamy strawberry sweetness coming through. Smoking with bout half an inch left, smoke time was 1 hour 40, drinking with a pint and half of Italian larger. Very good Stogie.
