H. UPMANN

H. Upmann is one of the oldest cigar brands in existence, dating back to the 1840s. It was started when Herman Upmann quit his job as a banker in the early 1840’s and went about opening up a branch office in Havana. Upmann quickly realised that he could begin a commercial endeavour in the industry and in 1844 he made the bold investment of a cigar factory and the H. Upmann brand was officially launched.

Later on in 1922, both the Upmann bank and the cigar business went bankrupt and they had to sell up to J. Frankau & Co., a British firm who continued the production of the cigars up until 1935 at which point the brand was sold on again to the recently established Menendez y Garcia Co., the makers of the famous Montecristo cigar. The new owners continued the production of H. Upmann cigars up until the nationalisation of the tobacco industry after the Cuban revolution.

H. Upmann's blend is composed exclusively of filler and binder tobaccos grown in the Vuelta Abajo zone.

Gold medals in no less than eleven international exhibitions during the 19th Century can be found on the brand's labelled boxes.

HALF CORONA

Introduced in 2011 the Half Corona is the first 3 1/2 inch Havana to be introduced since the Second World War. Previously called the Half-a-Corona, it was in its day the best selling Havana size.

Tasting Notes

This cigar is creamy with hints of coffee. Small attractive Havana, good draw with complex flavours for such a small cigar. An excellent short smoking break cigar.

90 / 100

"A short corona that burns slowly and draws well, loading the palate with lots of cedary, fruity notes as well as a hint of cinnamon and a peppery finish..."

Good quick smoke. Tastes like a Cuban and reasonably priced.

Still very new to cigars, however this is definitely the worst cigar I’ve smoked so far. The first third was very very acrid and bitter, not enjoyable at all. I persevered into the second third which became slightly better. Creamy with coffee notes, however the draw was almost too easy and when I looked into the end there was a large hole through the middle of the cigar (which explains the strange draw). The final third the bitterness returned and I had to put it out. I did not enjoy this cigar at all, but after reading other reviews I think I may have just had a poor stick, but based on this experience there is far better for the money

Decent smoke. Fairly mild flavours, not much complexity until the final third. Starts of with typical Cuban hay/earthiness, develops to a nice bit of pepper near the end. Got too spicy near the nub so had to be put out earlier than I normally would. Construction was good, but as it’s hand rolled (I think?) not as great as some others I’ve smoked.

Ive tried a few of these now from 3 different boxes, feeling that surely I must have just had bad luck at first. Every single one of these little things Ive tried has been bitter and with an acrid note that lingers in my mouth. Some ground coffee and nuts with an old toasted tobacco quality, but otherwise bitter, acrid and pointless. Despite the tiny length I just couldnt finish any of them they were so unpleasant. The last one I left to rest in the humidor for a few more months and carefully lit it on a nice day after a good meal with my palate feeling very fresh. Still it was the same unpleasant flavour. The only cigar Ive had lately that was worse was the aptly named Dirty Rat from Drew Estate, which wasnt just a poor or unpleasant cigar but just outright disgusting. From other reviews there must surely be much better examples out there that are quite different, but I can only rate it as I have experienced it. Very poor.

My first smoke after a 12 year break and what a welcome return! I chose the half corona size because I wanted to ease my way back in. I always liked Upmann in the past for their full bodied flavours and I was certainly rewarded with this small smoke - full flavour, light smoke, warm taste and soft on the palette. The notes stayed with me all day and it was good to be able to savour that all evening long. It is great to be back and I will be adding this little beauty to my on-line basket again very soon.
