It all started in Kendal, England in 1792. Thomas Harrison was a successful snuff maker. Jane Harrison Thomas’s daughter, eloped in 1838 to a young man of Kendal, Samuel Gawith. When Mr. Harrison died in 1841, he left the business to his daughter and son-in-law, and over the years Samuel Gawith continued to prosper.

In 1865, Samuel Gawith died prematurely at the age of 48. His eldest son, also called Samuel, was only 22 and his father had wisely left the firm in the hands of three trustees, one of whom was this son. The elder trustee was Henry Hoggarth, a boyhood friend and neighbour in Lowther Street who had founded a Kendal firm of land agents and surveyors.

In 1878, Samuel and his younger brother, John Edward Gawith decided amicably to go their separate ways and so the two Gawith firms came into being. Samuel took over the snuff mill and business at Mealbank, and John stayed on in Lowther Street.

The firm in Lowther Street went through some troubled times but, in 1887, a new partnership was founded between Samuel’s youngest brother, William Henry, and Henry Hoggarth junior, to be known as Gawith Hoggarth Company.

Gawith Hoggarth Company continued to manufacture tobacco products and snuff at the Lowther Street works until 2009, when they moved to new business premises.

Then in 2015, the two companies returned back together under one roof.

Tasting Notes

Samuel Gawith’s Full Virginia Flake is one of those tobaccos that everyone has either heard of or have tried it. With its cult like following, we can see why so many people love this tobacco.

The Virginia's have been matured before being selected and then hot pressed to bring out a darker, more fuller flavour. They are then aged some more before they are cut and sold to the masses.

A Smooth tobacco with copious amounts of natural Virginia flavour coming throughout. Medium amount of nicotine kick, it is clear to see why this is a clear favourite for so many Virginia lovers.

Excellent smoked on its own or as part of a blend.

Having enjoyed a variety of Samuel Gawith flake tobaccos I decided to give the Full Virginia a try. After breaking up the flake and giving it some drying time the tobacco burnt well from the get go. A decent smoke output, but certainly not vast plumes. The tastes from the get go are, as you may expect, a mild-medium note of slightly sweet, Virginia tobacco. After smoking it for a while I notice notes of hay/straw/grass in the aftertaste which proved to be very pleasant. There are certainly no flavourings or toppings that I could detect which gave a pleasant hour long smoke from a filled bowl. Personally I dont think it has enough in the taste to become my regular pipe tobacco, but it was certainly a very pleasant smoke. If you are the type of pipe smoker that enjoys multiple bowls in the day then I think that this would make a fine early bowl.

When the tin is opened the aroma reminded me of some fruit cake my nan would make every time we would visit, raisins and dried out apricots... Anyway this tobacco delivers exactly what it is, pure, natural, sweetened Virginia taste. It's easy to enjoy and a very earthy smoke.
