Description Ref # NRKendal

It all started in Kendal, England in 1792. Thomas Harrison was a successful snuff maker. Jane Harrison Thomas’s daughter, eloped in 1838 to a young man of Kendal, Samuel Gawith. When Mr. Harrison died in 1841, he left the business to his daughter and son-in-law, and over the years Samuel Gawith continued to prosper.

In 1865, Samuel Gawith died prematurely at the age of 48. His eldest son, also called Samuel, was only 22 and his father had wisely left the firm in the hands of three trustees, one of whom was this son. The elder trustee was Henry Hoggarth, a boyhood friend and neighbour in Lowther Street who had founded a Kendal firm of land agents and surveyors.

In 1878, Samuel and his younger brother, John Edward Gawith decided amicably to go their separate ways and so the two Gawith firms came into being. Samuel took over the snuff mill and business at Mealbank, and John stayed on in Lowther Street.

The firm in Lowther Street went through some troubled times but, in 1887, a new partnership was founded between Samuel’s youngest brother, William Henry, and Henry Hoggarth junior, to be known as Gawith Hoggarth Company.

Gawith Hoggarth Company continued to manufacture tobacco products and snuff at the Lowther Street works until 2009, when they moved to new business premises.

Then in 2015, the two companies returned back together under one roof.

Tasting Notes

A classic Virginia and Burley blend from Samuel Gawith, with the addition of a little added mystery!

As soon as you open the tin, you are greeted with golden and brown thick, cut flakes.

The aroma that wafts up is a mixture of the natural Virginia smells that Samuel Gawith are famous for. There is all so a slight nutty hint of Burley. The topping gives you a little citrus, tropical fruits vibe with an added earthy twist.

This tobacco requires very little drying and will smoke well a little moist. The flake can take a few times to become fully alight due to its thickness and how it is packed into the bowl.

Once you have this perfection of a tobacco burning the smoke is cool, smooth and very creamy. With the added topping not taking away the pure brilliance of this tobacco.

A smooth and light smoke that absolutely earns its ‘creamy’ name. A very understated but solid smoke that is as enjoyable as it is subtle. The smoke is thick and of Course - Creamy! Robust enough to be able to smoke fast but best enjoyed slow. Depending on your preference of how fine you like to rub it out, burns slow. I like to leave it just thicker than a ribbon cut and loosely pack the bowl. This forces me to sip it slow, ensuring a cool smoke. I would highly recommend this for beginners who are thinking of trying a flake cut!

If you want to try something different or new, try this. Even if you’re not crazy for Gawith blends, you will still be impressed with this Kendal Cream Flake. The flavour is distinctive and has created its own marmite effect (some will love it, some will hate it) But it’s worth trying for its sweet dollop of vanilla and essence of the Gawith signature tobacco. Some people relate to a ‘whiskey’ taste with this delicious blend, although I could not relate to this, I fully recommend this blend to anyone, regardless of what your preference normally would be.
