To celebrate the eighth and final season of Game of Thrones, Diageo joined forces and collaborated with HBO to release a limited edition collection of eight single malt Scotch whiskies inspired by each of the Houses of Westeros and the Night's Watch.
The Royal Lochnagar bottle is decorated with a rampant black Stag, the sigil of House Baratheon that once flew on banners above the Stormlands and King’s Landing signifying absolute power.
Having led the rebellion against the Targaryen dynasty, Robert Baratheon took the Iron Throne to rule over the Seven Kingdoms, with the Baratheon stag flying above King's Landing.
Nose: The pale amber colour of this single malt is light & delicate just like the aromas of this 12 year old Royal Lochnagar which develops soft notes of oak before moving into hints of banana foster with caramelised turbinado sugar.
Palate: On the palate it's sweet on the opening with layers of liquorice and rich, creamy vanilla coffee.
Finish: The palate blends into a long finish with mild nutmeg and a creamy custard tart finish.
Jim Murray has scored this Royal Lochnagar 12yo Game of Thrones House Baratheon 89/100 in his 2020 Whisky Bible.
‘Some lively early malt; toffee apple; powering malt emphasising and emphasized by the small stills in play. A simplistic vanilla and toffee fade; lightest touch of butterscotch. Not sure when I last encountered a Lochanger of such simplicity. Friendly and impossible not to like.’.
