A storming example of what Japanese whisky is truly capable of, Jim Murray scored different batches of Pure Malt Black with 92 and 95 points respectively.
The Pure Black is a great blended malt made up of whisky from the elegance of the Miyagikyo malts, and the smokier notes typical of Yoichi's strong character.
Take a sip, roll the whisky around your palate, and lose yourself in the depth of Nikka Pure Malt Black.
"Well if anyone can show me a better-balanced whisky than this you know where to get hold of me. You open a bottle of this at your peril: best to do so in the company of friends. Either way, it will be empty before the night is over. 43%" - Jim Murray - The Whisky Bible 2016
Nose: Earthy and chocolatey with herbaceous notes and peat smoke, as well as sweet fruit.
Palate: A winning combo of delicious dark chocolate and luscious dark berry fruit, along with toffee and vanilla notes, bolstered by some well-defined peat.
Finish: Rich and strong, the smoke and spice lasting longest.
