Description

It all started in Kendal, England in 1792. Thomas Harrison was a successful snuff maker. Jane Harrison Thomas’s daughter, eloped in 1838 to a young man of Kendal, Samuel Gawith. When Mr. Harrison died in 1841, he left the business to his daughter and son-in-law, and over the years Samuel Gawith continued to prosper.

In 1865, Samuel Gawith died prematurely at the age of 48. His eldest son, also called Samuel, was only 22 and his father had wisely left the firm in the hands of three trustees, one of whom was this son. The elder trustee was Henry Hoggarth, a boyhood friend and neighbour in Lowther Street who had founded a Kendal firm of land agents and surveyors.

In 1878, Samuel and his younger brother, John Edward Gawith decided amicably to go their separate ways and so the two Gawith firms came into being. Samuel took over the snuff mill and business at Mealbank, and John stayed on in Lowther Street.

The firm in Lowther Street went through some troubled times but, in 1887, a new partnership was founded between Samuel’s youngest brother, William Henry, and Henry Hoggarth junior, to be known as Gawith Hoggarth Company.

Gawith Hoggarth Company continued to manufacture tobacco products and snuff at the Lowther Street works until 2009, when they moved to new business premises.

And now, in 2015, the two companies will be back together under one roof.

Kendal Mixed No.8 CV is produced from a high quality, blend of the finest Burley and Virginia leaves, which have been top dressed with creamy Vanilla and a sharp Cherry blend.

Perfect for warming the taste buds on those winter days.

The mixed blends have a little more bite than the Gold for those who enjoy more flavour but don’t want the overpowering harshness of the Kendal Dark tobacco’s

All of the tobacco’s in the Kendal Shag Tobacco range are very clean, containing very little of the stem and produce a very natural flavour without the chemical harshness present in many modern tobaccos.

Please note: Pipe used is for illustration purposes only.

The initials stand for “Cherry Cream,” in my experience – “cream” tends to be more “flavour text” (no pun intended) within naming conventions and lets be honest: cream doesn’t really taste of much anyway, does it? I think this one shapes up really nicely against the competition. The flavour is very pleasant, there is a toasty character to the tobacco which combines well with the light cherry flavouring and almost gives a flavour of cherry pie.

More a sup than a smoke as it burns quite hot. Faintly tastes like Bakewell tart but more of a crowd pleaser. Tobacco is pretty decent.

A medium flake, the pouch note i found a tad disappointing, faint cherry scent, i didnt pick up any caramel, it rubs out easily, packs and lights well, upon smoking that initial disappointment fades away, this stuff is lovely! Sweet cherry taste, not much caramel mind you, the room note is amoungst the best around. Cracking smoke.
