Description

It all started in Kendal, England in 1792. Thomas Harrison was a successful snuff maker. Jane Harrison Thomas’s daughter, eloped in 1838 to a young man of Kendal, Samuel Gawith. When Mr. Harrison died in 1841, he left the business to his daughter and son-in-law, and over the years Samuel Gawith continued to prosper.

In 1865, Samuel Gawith died prematurely at the age of 48. His eldest son, also called Samuel, was only 22 and his father had wisely left the firm in the hands of three trustees, one of whom was this son. The elder trustee was Henry Hoggarth, a boyhood friend and neighbour in Lowther Street who had founded a Kendal firm of land agents and surveyors.

In 1878, Samuel and his younger brother, John Edward Gawith decided amicably to go their separate ways and so the two Gawith firms came into being. Samuel took over the snuff mill and business at Mealbank, and John stayed on in Lowther Street.

The firm in Lowther Street went through some troubled times but, in 1887, a new partnership was founded between Samuel’s youngest brother, William Henry, and Henry Hoggarth junior, to be known as Gawith Hoggarth Company.

Gawith Hoggarth Company continued to manufacture tobacco products and snuff at the Lowther Street works until 2009, when they moved to new business premises.

And now, in 2015, the two companies will be back together under one roof.

This tobacco is a blend containing 75% dark fired leaf 12.5% Malawi Burley and 12.5% Virginia.

You would therefore rightly expect a very strong smoke and one perhaps dominated by the pungent burnt Smokey flavour so characteristics of leaf cured by open fire and smoke.

Please note: Pipe used is for illustration purposes only.

Pipe Featured: Vauen Melvin 134 Smooth 9mm Filter Fishtail Pipe (VA521)

I have only smoked a few different blends up to this point. I believe this to be the first 'Lakeland' blend i have i tried and wasn't too fond. I can tell the quality is there but i could smell a certain ....... Cheesyness? It wasn't my feet, i checked. Very peculiar aroma. The tobacco is plenty strong and smoked ok but i could of done with letting it loose a little more moisture before i took fire to it.

I was unsure about this tobacco at first but, after having my first bowl earlier today I am glad that I took a chance on it. Although honestly if not for the other reviews I may well have overlooked this blend based on its strength alone and, that would definitely have been a mistake because the flavour and room note are both very pleasant. If you get the chance I recommend giving it a shot.

Absolutely amazing. I got this as part of a beginner pipe set and out of the bunch it was by far my favourite. Very strong and the aroma was exquisite. You definitely could taste some chocolate notes and at times it almost tasted like it had been soaked in rum barrel. Fabulous!

The pouch note is of raisins, dark chocolate and a smidge of alcohol, the lakeland floral notes are there also, this dark cut plug is a tobacco of full body and STRENGTH! Burns well, flavours are rich and floral, sure to give you the nic hics! Not to everybodys taste, personally i think its wonderful, no suprise that this historic blend has stood the test of time, perfect 5/5 for me.

Coniston Cut Plug In my opinion, this is the closest to Condor that we have. As a cut plug, it’s most similar to condor long cut (although technically a little shorter cut) but if you prefer Condor Ready Rubbed, it’s pretty easy to rub out to the same consistency… if you ask us nicely, we might even do it for you 😉. As for the taste, it shares Condor’s cool, medium bodied character and distinctively floral and woody notes on the palate. Even when we’re not struggling to get Condor, I often recommend this to Condor smokers who fancy a change… but not too much of a change!
