Description

It all started in Kendal, England in 1792. Thomas Harrison was a successful snuff maker. Jane Harrison Thomas’s daughter, eloped in 1838 to a young man of Kendal, Samuel Gawith. When Mr. Harrison died in 1841, he left the business to his daughter and son-in-law, and over the years Samuel Gawith continued to prosper.

In 1865, Samuel Gawith died prematurely at the age of 48. His eldest son, also called Samuel, was only 22 and his father had wisely left the firm in the hands of three trustees, one of whom was this son. The elder trustee was Henry Hoggarth, a boyhood friend and neighbour in Lowther Street who had founded a Kendal firm of land agents and surveyors.

In 1878, Samuel and his younger brother, John Edward Gawith decided amicably to go their separate ways and so the two Gawith firms came into being. Samuel took over the snuff mill and business at Mealbank, and John stayed on in Lowther Street.

The firm in Lowther Street went through some troubled times but, in 1887, a new partnership was founded between Samuel’s youngest brother, William Henry, and Henry Hoggarth junior, to be known as Gawith Hoggarth Company.

Gawith Hoggarth Company continued to manufacture tobacco products and snuff at the Lowther Street works until 2009, when they moved to new business premises.

And now, in 2015, the two companies will be back together under one roof.

Gawith Hoggarth's Best Brown Unscented Flake is purely flavoured with the select Virginia and Burley leaves it's made from. It has no topping or casing but delivers a diverse range of creamy, nutty, earthy, peaty and sweet flavours.

The tobacco burns evenly and gives a cool, medium strength smoke that is easy on the tongue. This blend is enjoyable time and again, any time of the day.

Please note: Pipe used is for illustration purposes only.

Tasting Notes

The flakes are easily managed, uniformly shaped, medium cut and perfectly moist. Swirls of yellow amongst golden browns, with rivulets of darker chestnut and hazelnut browns please the eye.

The aroma is typical of a rich Virginia and Burley mix with sweet hay-like hues and deeper peaty earthiness. There are hints of floral wisps coming from the tobacco but these don't carry over into the smoke much.

This satisfying blend is enjoyable on its own or, if you're feeling adventurous, as a base for adding your own flavourings.

Trying this for the first time, I'm not getting any 'airborne' Lakeland taste for which I am thankful. This is one that GH have not 'polluted'. It's sweet and flavoursome but the described note is missing. Odd. But as taste is subjective not a concern. This took to the flame very well, a little too thick cut to fold and stuff, so a tad of rubbing out was called for. This is by now bowl number three. Cubing was a no-no, this tobacco wants love and attention not brutality with a blade. Heavy rubbing out (bowl 2) made it zip along and the bowl was gone, ashes to ashes style. Room note is negligible, the cat has not complained yet and he does, often. Luckily for me the wife has no sense of smell so even pure Latakia doesn't faze her. Leaving the room I smoke in and re-entering some ten minutes later I noted a pleasant round aroma of quality tobacco , no cigarette nastiness, just pipe smoke. I shall be buying more of this. The next bowl will be a mixing experiment, perhaps with a little Turkish/Izmir to see if I can brighten the taste, with a touch more acridity. An excellent GH product.
