I guess you would say that I am a seasonal cigar smoker, that is to say, that I donÂ’t smoke every day and ususally only outside in the summer. So after my winter cigar hibernation,(from which I emerge maybe once on New YearÂ’s Eve for a rather chilly herf huddled around the patio heater), I like to start off the season by aclimatising my pallate with a milder cigar, usually an HdM Epicure No.2. My enjoyment of cigars is usually curtailed by the weather conditions and my ability to sit still and enjoy a cigar without the cold making it a more rushed experience than I would like. After an unusually stunning summer here in the UK and some wonderfully relaxing herfing while in France, the last few weeks of wet and dreary weather had left me hankering for a cigar.

TodayÂ’s conditions were as perfect as we are likely to get for some time, so suitably attired, I headed out to the garden with an relatively mild espresso, a tot of Havana Club Especial and a petit robusto.

As with most HdM cigars, the construction is very good, with lovely matte oily wrapper starting to develop after a little over a year in the humidor and near perfect assembly around the cap area. After punching it with a wide punch, I tested the draw, which seemed to offer just the right amount of resistance. Pre lighting aromas were of hay, cedar and sweet spices and were quite pronounced.

Slowly toasting the foot with a triple flame, got it lit easily and the first draw was a delight. Lots of lovely creamy smoke with a sweetness that tingled on the tongue. Nuts, hay, coffee and spice seem to be the order of the day, in a package that is to my mind slightly stronger in body than an Epicure No.2, developing a little about halfway through, to be a little earthier. A very enjoyable smoke and one which I found hard to tear myself away from, even though I had begun to burn my fingers on the remains.

As far as I am concerned, every cigar should be an experience and I am hard pushed to find a reason I have not tried this little gem before, as a very pleasant experience it was. Lasting a full 50 mins (the way I smoke ‘em) it belies it size by offering a lot in a small package. The only negative is that it canoed a bit, but I find that with many other cigars, so I can recommend this cigar highly.
