Distilled way back in 1980, this extraordinary release of Glenesk was bottled in 2004 by Gordon & Macphail under their, Rare Old range.
Glenesk is getting harder and harder to find with new releases few and far between so this should be a fascinating and delicious chance to try this rare distillate at a greater age and perfect bottling strength of 46%.
A rare old bottling from the long closed Glenesk distillery in Montrose, limited to 551 bottles of fruity sweet goodness.
Nose: Delicate sherry influences with stewed apple and pear aromas.
Palate: Sweet with tangerine and strawberry notes, complemented by a creamy chocolate edge.
Finish: Smooth, an underlying hint of menthol lingers.
Jim Murray has scored this Glenesk 1980 Rare Old (Bottled 2014) G&M 95/100 in his 2020 Whisky Bible
‘What a charmer; better dead than when alive, some might argue. But this has weathered the passing three and half decades with ease and really does have something of an ice cream feel to it from the beginning to the end…well I suppose the distillery was located close to the seaside…One of the most understated but beautiful distillery bottlings of the year.’
