Japanese Whisky Set Bottling Note

Despite only arriving on the whisky playing field comparatively recently, Japan has some of the very greatest malts in the world. This set of five 3cl samples demonstrates how utterly astonishing some of these whiskies are.

Contents of the set are subject to change. However, rest assured that whichever dram set you order will include 5 superb drams which will either match or exceed the value of what is listed.

- Nikka Whisky From The Barrel

Tasting Notes

Hakushu 12 Year Old:
Nose: Light and crisp with fresh notes of cut hay and sweet mixed peels. Also present is just a hint of hazelnut and barley malt.
Palate: Clean with notes of fresh cut fruits, gentle barley malt and smoke. A floral character with citrus zest.
Finish: Sweet and spicy.

Hibiki Japanese Harmony:
Nose: Aromas of marmalade, orange blossom and apricot jam, held together with a subtle spiciness, giving a hint of cinnamon and clove.
Palate: The generous fruit continues on to the palate, with oranges and apricots in abundance. There’s a little peppery spice, but the soft, succulent fruit takes hold. Nice balance, and nicely crafted.
Finish: The spiciness takes over from the fruit and lingers, along with a little barrel char.

Miyagikyo Non Age:
This single malt whisky features a sweet and elegant fragrance like fresh flowers, combined with a soft maltiness and a delicate, gentle and appealing mature essence derived from sherry casks.

Togouchi 12 Year Old:
The Togouchi 12 year old is a blended whisky with a Scottish and Canadian character but also a typical Japanese soul. Aged in oak barrels and made with a good percentage of peaty single malts, this whisky expresses intense wood and cereal aromas mixed with peaty notes.

Nikka From The Barrel:
Nose: Medium-body with good balance. Notes of cut flowers and fresh fruits appear with a kick of spice and a little oak.
Palate: Full-bodied and punchy. There is plenty of warming winter spice and toffee, a little caramel, vanilla and a good mouthful of fresh fruit.
Finish: Long, warming and fruity with a little oaken spice.

It's a shame I didn't get the Hibiki, Yamazaki and Togouchi whiskies as these were the ones I was looking forward to trying the most. I've sampled a few of the Nikka whiskies already and they were replaced with these instead. A little disappointing, but still looking forward to trying some of the others. Packing of this item was very strange though. All the bottles were taken out of the packaging and arrived individually bubble wrapped. Box was a little excessive for the contents.
