Description

Synonymous with the peatiest of Scotland's single malt regions, Islay is a world-renowned whisky producing island located in the Inner Hebrides, but the island produces a far greater range of flavour than you'd expect.

Islay Whisky Tasting Set is a collection of fine single malt Scotch whiskies best enjoyed neat or with just a splash of water.

The Tasting Set contains 5 x 3cl bottles of:
- Kilchoman Machir Bay 2014 Release
- Bowmore Tempest 10 Year Old - Batch 5
- Caol Ila 12 Year Old
- Bruichladdich - Batch 2 (That Boutique-y Whisky Company)
- Laphroaig Triple Wood

Tasting Notes

Kilchoman Machir Bay:
Nose: Sweet, vanilla fuses together with lemongrass and just a hint of peat.
Palate: Rich and creamy, the sweet vanilla soon turns into dark chocolate, spicy clove and peat smoke.
Finish: Medium-long finish with dark chocolate, clove and peat smoke.

Bowmore Tempest:
Nose: Lots of fruit, nectarine, citrus, pear. Good peaty backbone with a hint of the coast.
Palate: Very fruity, peaty and rich. Cereal sweetness, complex.
Finish: Long, fresh, tangy, salty.

Caol Ila 12 Year Old:
Nose: Fresh and herbal with rubbed peppermint leaves, oils, cigar leaves, smoke, hickory and smoked ham.
Palate: A good body with more oil, tar and elegant smokes. Also with hints of boiled sweets.
Finish: Long and peppery with a kick of warming spice before finally smoke.

Bruichladdich Batch 2:
Nose: A little musky at first. Cigar box and tobacco leaf too, making way for red fruit, vanilla, red lace liquorice and black pepper.
Palate: Quite vinous on the palate, still very 'red', with more cigar box and some fruity marinaded barbecue char.
Finish: Slowly but surely starts to enjoy some strawberry tobacco.

Laphroaig Triple Wood:
Nose: Molasses and oily toffee. Dates, walnuts, vanilla, toastiness, sweetness etc. We got oodles of butter, zest, cool wood smoke, almond, and passion fruit.
Palate:Surprisingly savoury at first - think musty wood sheds and hints of moist autumnal forest floor. The sherry notes are there too, but rather than being the big Christmas pudding flavour one often expects from Oloroso-aged whisky, we are instead treated to a much more restrained iced fruitcake, graced with hints of Laphroaig’s classic smoke.
Finish: Oaked. The mustiness carries into the finish, which lasts for a good while, with oily spices and dried fruit.

It's a shame I didn't get the Hibiki, Yamazaki and Togouchi whiskies as these were the ones I was looking forward to trying the most. I've sampled a few of the Nikka whiskies already and they were replaced with these instead. A little disappointing, but still looking forward to trying some of the others. Packing of this item was very strange though. All the bottles were taken out of the packaging and arrived individually bubble wrapped. Box was a little excessive for the contents.
