Light up a Pre-Castro Havana Just Hours After Ordering

IF YOU fancy a pre-Castro Havana in optimum smokeable condition to relax after a difficult meeting discussing the Cuban blockade with US clients, you only have to email or phone C.Gars and you can light up within two hours in London.

Or if you have run out of your favourite Cohibas on leaving New Yor, smoking Cubans has now become twice as subversive, you can have them waiting for you at your next port of call outside the US.

C.Gars delivers worldwide within two days to almost all parts in the world, according to Mitchell Orchant.

From his north London emporium in the depths of Kilburn, Mr Orchant organises his direct delivery business of cigars, humidors, and pipes and tobacco with a small staff, 24 hours per day all year round, with overnight deliveries in England. There is also an office in Norwich.

Growing up with his father and grandfathers regularly enjoying their Havanas, it was only natural for the young Mitchell to enjoy his first Romeo y Julieta tube no 2 after concluding his first business deal at the age of 17. It was bought at JJ Fox, the UK's oldest cigar merchant, established in St James Street since 1787.

He developed his father's business supplying premium cigars to the catering industry into a mail order firm, delivering directly to private customers at highly competitive retail prices, whether for an order for a single cigar or 100 boxes. Over the last six years the business emphasis has shifted to the internet.

In the meantime, Mr Orchant also developed a growing business in selling mature and vintage Havanas, aged from five to 50 years old, and special editions sought after by aficionados, collectors and even just as an investment.

"I have clients who invest and then keep themselves comfortable in smoking from the profits of selling again or auctioning part of their collections," said Mr Orchant.

His latest venture was acquiring the Turmeaus Tobacconist in the heart of Liverpool's financial and legal district, where it opened for business at 16 Water Street in 1817, serving Merseyside and worldwide ports.

It might look odd for an internet supplier to go back into high street retailing, but Mr Orchant said that he saw no obstacle and intended to buy more specialist tobacconists.

Those pondering "to smoke or not to smoke" their collection of rare cigars should attend Christie's next cigar auction on Thursday May 20 at its main auction room in St James, starting after the wine auction, at 5pm.
