HABANOS DAY 2004 - MILAN, ITALY

Kudos to the Italian Cigar Clubs Association and the official importer of Habanos "Diadema" for organising the most incredible "Habanos Day" in Milan on the 30th May

Organisers included my dear friends Angelo Bigi and Massimo de Giovanni and I was very happy to accept their kind invitation to attend the event.

The event took place at the sumptuous 5 star Hotel Villa Torretta and I arrived on the Friday before to meet up with a few of my Italian smoking buddies before the main event.

Saturday evening Diadema generously hosted a wonderful dinner at a Cuban restaurant which went on till the early hours of the morning. Typical ( but good!) Cuban food. Crystal beer and 7 year old Ron Caribbean (rum) complimented with an excellent Cuban band to round off a delightful evening.

Massimo surprised me with a Partagas SD1 ( the edicion limitada maduro due to be released commercially later this year). Now this Havana was a beauty. Not only was the appearance without fault but the construction was perfect and for a fresh puros the blend was incredibly sweet and complex. Needless to say I nearly burnt my fingers on this stogie! Thanks Massimo:-) This is bound to be a ridiculously popular and successful cigar.

Sunday and Habanos Day kicked off at 10 in the morning. There were copious quantities of food and drink provided throughout the day including an excellent Havana Club rum bar.

Aston Martin and Jaguar cars were also exhibiting some of Britain's finest sports cars which brought a very "good life" feel to the venue.

There were cigar degustations (tasting) and I attended the tasting of the Trinidad robusto extra where James Suckling from Cigar Aficionado magazine spoke about the range and history of the Trinidad brand.

There was a exhibition hall packed with companies exhibiting their latest wares including ST Dupont Lighters and various humidor and smokers accessory manufacturers and distributors.

Thanks to Alberto and Allesandro for inviting me to lunch with the very friendly Modena Cigar Club. Local pasta and rice dishes were enjoyed at a typical Italian restaurant which was not normally cigar friendly but were happy to see 20 + diners turning up on a Sunday!

The Gala dinner really was one of the best cigar events I have ever had the pleasure of attending. Held in an enormous marquis in the hotel grounds, the food wine and service was without fault. I calculate around 350 cigar smokers attended. A variety of cigars were smoked throughout the evening and the new Montecristo Edmundo was also introduced.

Representatives from Habanos S.A. including Miguelito from H Upmann were also in attendance.

Thanks to my cigar herf buddy Alex for putting up with my constant requests to translate
the Italian to English!....and well done on receiving your award !
( and I'm not talking about the Davidoff I gifted you!)

A raffle was held that ensured there were many winners ( including me!) many speeches and presentations kept the evening moving at a fast and enjoyable pace.

The Cuban 10 piece band including 4 singers was truly outstanding and made the evening all the more pleasurable.

What made the event all the more interesting is that the Havana cigar scene is very recent. I believe it only got going seriously around 3 years ago and yet there are now Cigar Clubs that meet regularly all around Italy and they even have their own association. Books have been written ( very good ones might I add) and the level of enthusiasm and knowledge form the Italians is truly impressive.

The whole event was so professionally organised I was certain that professional events organisers must have put it all together but amazed to find that in fact it was completely organised by the
Cigars Clubs and Diadema. Very impressive to say the least.

It's great to see the official importer has such a good and close relationship with the Cigar Clubs too.

My thanks to Angelo and Massimo and the other organisers for the most memorable
"Habanos Day" which I hope to attend again in the future..

Warmest wishes
