It isn't often that you will find a Scotch whisky finished in Port Wine casks, but that is just what is done here!
The Port Wine casks, or pipes as they are called, are much larger than a standard barrel with the former yielding close to 500 litres and the latter only 120 litres.
The complexity of Cragganmore prescribes an out of the ordinary choice, and maturation in port-wine casks give the whisky a sweet and fruity depth.
Nose: Sweet and malty. Fruitier and juicier than the standard bottling. A hint of smoke.
Palate: Firm, sweet, with smoky undertones and fruitiness. Malt, oak and smoke at the base. Intriguingly layered.
Finish: Medium to long with fine, oaky expressions, from bananas and vanilla to cocoa. Much drier than it began.
Whiskeybase has scored this Cragganmore 2005 Distillers Edition 2017 Edition Single Malt Whisky 81.86/100 overall on their site through customer recommendations.
‘Recommended Speysider, well aged in a port wine barrel, that surpasses many 12-year-olds.’
