An outstanding Convalmore distilled in 1975 and bottled 40 years later in 2015 by Gordon & MacPhail for their Rare Old series.
There is hardly any Convalmore left now - just a handful of bottlings in the last decade and it's quite possible that G&M have more than Diageo. Someday soon the last Convalmore will be gone, which is such a shame as it is superb, unique whisky.
This nearly 40-year-old Convalmore from G&M is yet another quiet masterpiece in the fabulous, historically important Rare Old series. Bottled from a refill sherry hogshead, which yielded 299 bottles at a punchy 46%.
Waxy, fruity and oily, this Convalmore 1975 is another elegant reminder of the lost Highland/Speyside style, bursting with character and complexity. A real gem of a dram from a distillery that never got the credit it deserved in its lifetime and has sadly remained in obscurity in the decades since its closure in 1985.
Please note as this is a vintage whisky, conditions of bottle/label and liquid level can vary.
Nose: Honeycomb, ripe banana and subtle underlying beeswax aromas.
Palate: Cracked black pepper, nicely leads to pear, plum and blueberry flavours.
Finish: Features from the palate continue with the black pepper and fruit aspect, these are all complemented by a touch of delicious milk chocolate.
Jim Murray has scored this Convalmore Gordon & MacPhail Rare Old Convalmore 1975 as 94/100 in his 2020 Whisky Bible.
‘Like finding an old lover 30 years further on: a little greyer, not quiet in the same lithe shape as three decades earlier…but instantly recognisable and still very beautiful…’
