The history of the Chapoutier family stretches back to the early nineteenth century when current owner Michel Chapoutier’s great-great-great-grandfather, Marius purchased an estate and some vineyards.
Marius Chapoutier made history in the region when he became the first grape grower there to vinify his own fruit and in a move unusual at the time, he decided he should make the wine himself where not only did the quality of the wines increase but it provided the necessary capital to expand the legendary estate.
Colour: Deep garnet.
Aroma: Dried fruits, crystalized orange peel and black pepper.
Palate: Rich with layers ofdried plum, baking spices and delicious dark chocolate.
Spread out over steep, narrow terraces, the Banyuls appellation overhangs the Mediterranean Sea. More than two thousand years old, the vineyards are still hand-worked, and are rooted in stony schist soils. M. Chapoutier Banyuls is a "vin doux naturel," fortified wine that is exceptional and age-worthy. It is naturally sweet, shows full fruit and wonderful character and is universally perfect with fruit and/or chocolate desserts.
