A stunning vintage Caol Ila released at 30 years of age as part of Diageo's 2014 Special Releases.
This Special Release is the oldest official bottling from a distillery that's stature has grown from being considered the 'work horse' of Islay.
Aged in a combination of refill American and refill European oak - this Caol Ila is reminiscent of a cross between Brora and Port Ellen, combining the waxiness of the Brora with the leather note of the Port Ellen.
In total, a number of 7,638 bottles were produced with this bottle coming from auction!
Nose: Huge with medicinal hints followed by refreshing melon, nuts and cream. Perhaps a hint of rice pudding with a helping of jam which then turns into a pleasant sootiness.
Palate: Menthol. The refreshing melon continues with mango and a smokiness that builds before taking centre stage on the tail.
Finish: Long with a touch more soot and plenty of smoke, impressive for this age.
