Another year and another delicious unpeated Caol Ila at the affordable end of Diageo's Special Releases.
This 17 Year Old is now the tenth release in the series and at 17 years old, it's the oldest also having been distilled in 1997 but unlike the others, this is a little less ‘full on’ than previous expressions.
Nose: Toffee aroma with allspice, lots of brown sugar and a touch of anise before cinnamon and just a hint of chilli.
Palate: Still toffee but this time tangy. A little chalk and some increasingly charred oak as well as smoke.
Finish: Unsuprisingly smoky.
Overall: The smokiest unpeated release for many years, with plenty of bourbon cask character.
