The first piece in the collection is a one off piece inspired by Laguito cigar factory, the famous factory on the outskirts of Havana where Cohiba cigars are made (Cohiba is the flagship brand of Habanos).
The building of Laguito, which was originally the former private home of the Prince of Pinar del Rio, has been translated by LINLEY into an architectural box which serves as a humidor for storing a rare collection of Cohiba cigars assembled by Hunters & Frankau.
The LINLEY humidor is made from sycamore with inlays of ripple sycamore, bird’s eye maple, burr oak, holly and Indian ebony. Intricate marquetry detailing, architectural mouldings and lippings are used in the decorative relief of the front and side elevations, and the building sits resplendently atop a recreation of the famous Laguito front steps, (where cigars are traditionally enjoyed). The lid of the box is flat, to mirror that of the Laguito building, and is decorated with quarter matched ripple sycamore and a marquetry emblem of the Cohiba cigar brand.
The main compartment of the humidor houses three lift out trays with capacity for approximately 194 cigars. The humidor is lined with cedar and features a ‘Cigar Spa’ humidification system. There are four secret compartments hidden with the structure – one hidden within the steps which houses cigar scissors and matches, and two either side of the building on push catches. These are ideal for storing special cigar bands. There is a fourth which is so secret its whereabouts cannot be revealed!
About Cohiba:
The Cohiba brand was created for Fidel Castro in 1966 and El Laguito became the legendary house where this top secret cigar was produced. Only Fidel, heads of states and diplomas were given Cohiba cigars as a very special gifts.
Cohiba was first made available more widely in 1982 and today is the most prestigious cigar brand in the world. The leaves used for Cohiba are a selection taken from the finest Vegas Finas de Primera in the Vuelta Abajo region. Uniquely amongst Habanos cigars, two of Cohiba’s ‘filler’ leaves undergo a third fermentation in barrels.
The cigars contained in this humidor are taken from limited and special lines produced by Cohiba in the past.
Cigar Contents:
Like fine wines or rare spirits, habanos once boxed, improve with age. The benefit of ageing is that the cigars develop a smoother, mellower and more refined taste
The vintage of a cuban cigar is measured from the date when the finished cigar is boxed in the factory. The tobaccos within the cigars would have been harvested several years earlier (depending on the type of leaf).
At Hunters & Frankau, Habanos is aged within carefully controlled temperature, humidity and air circulation. Before releasing any Aged Habanos, they are checked by fully trained Habanos S.A. quality technicians specially flown in from Cuba for the purpose. Boxes that receive their approval are stamped 'Revisado', which means 'Checked'.
The tradition of ageing cigars continues today and is experiencing a revival as collectors become increasingly interested in vintage cigars.
