Revolt in Style - A Freedom Dinner
June 2007

Monday 25th June 2007 - Savoy Hotel London

I was very lucky and delighted to be invited to join John Darnton and Simon Chase of Hunters and Frankau at the Savoy hotel for a special event to mark the Introduction of public smoking ban on 1st July organised by Boisdales and Forest. This was in a way a last stand and a bit for the smoker's rights campaigners against the smoking ban by urging the government to make exceptions for private clubs and pubs.  Some 400 guests turned up to support the campaigners, including celebrities at the dinner hosted by chef Antony Worrall Thompson, who was also one of the speakers after the dinner. Other speakers included Claire Fox, director of the Institute of Ideas,  and Journalist and broadcaster Andrew Neil.  The atmosphere and the spirit of the night was not to give up and keep fighting against this draconian law, against the stereotype of health issues related "to smokers", and the fight for more tolerant society with freedom of choice for the adult public for which Britain has been known for many years. Sadly this was one of the last opportunities to eat, drink and smoke in a major public venue anywhere in the UK. I can't wait for the Summer cigar party on 5th July. What a great way to show that the smoking ban will  definitely not stop us smokers having a good time out while socialising and enjoying a smoke.. whether it's a cigar, a pipe or a cigarette.
