London Auction – Havana Festival!

Our Winter Auction was held on the 19th November at Boisdale Canary Wharf and was as expected a resounding success. Bidders joined us from all over the world to enjoy the pre-auction herfing as well as the evenings event. The auction was held in the main dining room and literally packed with bidders.

Our consultant auctioneer Jonathan Humbert did an exceptional job of knocking down almost 350 Lots in just under 2 ½ hours which was quite a task! Well done Jonathan – great to have you on the Team!

The auction had a 96% sales rate which is pretty high by any auctioneers standards and record prices were achieved for rare Davidoff and Dunhill Havana cigar Lots. Plenty of interest in Pre embargo cigars, Cohiba and Limited edition humidors generally continuing the trend that we have seen over the last few years.

We keep all sold prices on our auction website search facility as a useful resource for both sellers and bidders, aficionados and connoisseurs and it’s interesting to see how values have increased on so many cigars whilst a few have stayed static.

I think bidders are clear that they demand good quality stocks, clean boxes and good provenance in which case they will pay the market price or perhaps above market price for certain items.

The event was followed by the Spectator Cigar Smoker of the Year Awards dinner – more details here and here

The food and wine were superb as were the Fuente and Alec Bradley cigars we enjoyed over the course of the evening.

Big congrats to all the Award winners 🙂

Thanks to the C.Gars Auction Team including Jonathan, Michelle, Eliska as well as my wife Karyn and daughter Tasha for all their help before during and after the Auction.

My thanks to Ranald, Susanna, Nathan and Valeri and all the Boisdale Team for such a splendid event.

So the update for successful bidders is if you haven’t collected but have requested shipping… The Lots are now on the way to you. For Sellers – Sellers reports should be in your inbox in the next 24 hours.

No doubt the attendees enjoyed the evening as much as I did… And we look forward to doing it all over again next year 🙂 we start accepting auction Lots for our Summer auction at the beginning of February.

As if the Auction wasn’t enough action for me in a week, I zoomed off to Havana for the annual Partagas Festival! Relaxing with a pre-flight massage in the Virgin lounge and then meeting up with the boys from The Wellesley in Upper Class, the only thing that was missing was cigar smoking!

Smoked a Partagas Short at Jose Marti airport whilst waiting for the suitcases to come though (there is a smoking ban but no one seemed bothered) and my regular driver had a bottle of rum ready in the car which was perfect with a Partagas P2 as we headed off on our usual run around of Havana.

First stop was the Melia Habana (Robaina shop) one of my favourites as they take great and very professional care of my cigars. I grabbed a rum from the bar and took a look in my locker to decide what to smoke. Settled on a box of 2001 Partagas Presidentes. first cigar was too perfect for words, the cigars were covered in plume, the draw was excellent and the flavour was old style full flavour, earthy and spicy Partagas.

Sadly the good experience ended with that first cigar as the rest of the box was terribly disappointing in terms of construction and draw. Joys of the 2001 lack of quality control I guess. Hey ho… Consoled myself smoking Cohiba Behike 54 and 56 as well as Cuban regional edition El Rey del Mundo Infantes over the next few days. All of which had excellent construction thankfully.

Visited the Partagas shop (factory closed down but shop is open), always good to see Hamlet the roller (he rolled for us in London a couple of years ago) who is managing the shop now together with the lovely and attentive Grecia.

Full range and stocks of cigars at Partagas. Melia Habana, Palacio, Melia Cohiba, Nacional in fact everywhere I visited and the El Laguito factory looks like it’s at very full production with large and beautiful tobacco leaf. So no signs of any shortages although a few vitolas of this and that in the UK seem to be coming and going… and coming back again.

The gala dinner was held at the Tropicana and as usual was a superb evening. I had a great table of friends including Amir Saarony who wrote the incredible book on Partagas. The auction which raises money for the Cuban National Health service appeared to be very successful and I was happy to help it along with a few bids for able auctioneer Massimo di Giovanni. The Tropicana show followed the auction and was awesome… As ever.

Herfed over the next couple of days at
La Fontana (superb food and service to match)
Sloppy Joe’s
La Dominica (odd name for an Italian restaurant!)
La Ferminia (Cigar Club bash)
Espacios (very cool place)
and Melen Bar (great place)

I’ve actually lost count of how many times I have been to Cuba! Probably around 70 times over the years but I never tire of my trips. Great cigars, rum, music, weather and very friendly people… Who could ask for more.

Finally back in C.Gars London office for a week or two before I head round all the Turmeaus and Robert Graham cigar and whisky shops around the country can’t believe Christmas is only a few weeks away! Our shops are crammed full of cigars and spirits, gifts and accessories and of course we guarantee the best service and value in the UK… After all, we are the largest cigar specialist in the UK 🙂

Have a smokey weekend

Peaceful puffing

Going… Going…

auction catalogueWell, you guessed from the subject line its Auction time again! Next Tuesday the 19th  we will be holding our Winter Cigar Auction at the fabulous Boisdale Canary Wharf at 5 pm.

Not long to get your bids in (unless you are bidding at the auction of course) as online bidding closes at 5pm on the 18th November.

Open day this Sunday at our London offices from 12pm – 5 pm but please email to confirm that you wish to view, [email protected]. Boisdale has very kindly sent us a few cases of their delicious Champagne for clients to enjoy whilst they are viewing Lots 🙂

Viewing is always advised and for absentee bidders we are always happy to provide condition reports over email.

Ranald and I have planned an outrageous evening for The

Spectator Cigar Smoker of the Year Awards which follow on from the auction. Full details here but this

event is absolutely completely and utterly sold out now 🙂

We’ll be smoking some of the best Fuente cigars accompanied but some incredible libations whilst we bid on some great Lots at the Silent Auction over dinner!

I’m looking forward to welcoming friends and clients from all over the world over the next few days for some great smokes and super herfing! Pre herf will be at the lovely Bulgari Hotel – drop me an email if you would like to join us for a smoke/drink.

… also in the news this week:

Delighted to report that a new Turmeaus cigar shop is now in the planning and will open in Norfolk at the end of February 2014. We have always had offices in Norfolk but now have so many clients in this beautiful county that we thought it’s about time we opened a specialist store with walk in humidor and sampling lounge. Our new Norfolk premises will also have the largest pipe tobacco range in the UK and a huge range of humidors and all other cigar related accessories.

My Co-Director, Laura is overseeing this expansion which is very exciting for our Norfolk C.Gars Team.

It was a week of travelling for me (no change there then!) as I visited our Norfolk offices on Monday and had an exciting presentation on our new C.Gars website due to launch in the next few week . It’s a massive improvement on current version and I think our clients will love it. We’re working on lots of cool interactive features for 2014 to make each visit a fabulous customer friendly experience.

On Tuesday I headed up to Turmeaus Liverpool and Turmeaus Chester to see how our shops are ready for the Christmas season… And well yes, they are very ready! Huge ranges of cigars, pipes, lighters and accessories – everything for the smoker as well as traditional warm and friendly, helpful service.

Liverpool and Chester also sell Cuban rum and superb single malt whisky with the range being increased substantially over the next week or so. You won’t find these single malts in the supermarkets, they have been selected for quality and value by our head buyer, Linda from Robert Graham Ltd.

Chester is now open late night Thursdays till 8 pm and I understand that Liverpool will have a new Hilton Hotel opening next year, complete with a cigar terrace! Great news, as its just round the corner from our Fenwick street location 🙂

I was particularly impressed with the range in the Chester walk in humidor but then I should be as our assistant Manager, Calum is a ‘Master of Cigars’ and very knowledgeable indeed as well as lovingly caring for the condition and appearance of the premium cigars at Chester. We welcome cigar sampling at both Liverpool and Chester Turmeaus.

Managed to sneak in a herfette with Roy – my cigar smoking chum from Chester. Roy enjoyed an Upmann Robusto Limited edition whilst I herfed one of the new Romeo de Luxe Limited editions just released.

We also have the new Montecristo Petit no. 2 in stock now and rolling out to all of our shops, singles and boxes and I reckon they will prove to be very popular indeed.

Oodles of new products arriving and being added to our humongous range daily – easy to check out the latest products on this link.

Okay, so my next blog will have auction (preliminary subject to confirmation) results on it as usual as well as a few pics and then after the auction… I’m off again! this time to the Partagas Festival in Havana 🙂

Have a smokey weekend and best of luck to all of our auction bidders and sellers

Peaceful puffing

Robert Graham Cigar and Whisky Tasting EventFair to say a great evening was had by all and great to see that the average age of the 40 or so attendees was around 23 by my estimation. My thanks to Scott from Tor for his support and 5 hour drive to the event and of course Cailin and his Team (James, Fergus and Mimi) from Robert Graham Cambridge.

The new H. Upmann Connoisseur A has arrived in very small quantity a big smoke for the experienced smoker. Well-crafted and well blended.

I mentioned the lovely Partagas Serie D No. 4 book on last week’s blog which have all but sold out now (thank you customers!) and am happy to introduce our next edition which is the incredible Partagas Serie D No. 3 Limited edition from 2006. 14 of these delicious cigars in a Partagas imaged book style cabinet made in Cuba of course. Reserve them while you can, half have already sold out.

C.Gars Auction Cigar Cartoon

Trick or Treat?!

Treat of course 🙂 as I herfed my way across the Robert Graham shops in Scotland this week and managed to sample my way through a few of our top secret new releases planned for the next few months. Also contrasted them with some of the current releases such as Clynelish 1995 and Linkwood 1997 from our award winning Dancing Stag range.

Rose Street Wall of Whisky

‘Joys of being a whisky merchant’ or should I say ‘ joys of having a superb partner who is a whisky expert!’ (I only know how to drink the water of life!)

Our Rose street shop is going through a bit of a face lift with some great new LED lighting in the cabinets and our new corporate Robert Graham branding on the fascia as well as a nice refreshing paint jobbie in the next week or so. Our lovely and knowledgeable Manageress, Jo, seems to have filled Rose street up to the ceiling with the finest single malt whisky, Cuban rum, Cuban coffee and an gigantic range of Cuban and other premium cigars… So I think she’s all set for Christmas 🙂

Dougie and Danilo at our Canongate branch (The Treasurer) have reorganized the stocks in the walk in humidor and they look absolutely great, splendid range and great condition and you can always find some well matured Havanas and early regional editions.

Over at our new store in Glasgow, Linda is busier than ever and just hosted our first whisky tasting evening with Jamie from Carn Mor. I understand it was a very successful evening and the first of many. We have a gorgeous tasting room in Glasgow and I’m so happy to see it put to good use.

Glasgow Rare WhiskiesThe Glasgow store is a bit of a work in progress as we continuously increase the already substantial range of whisky, cigars and hand made chocolate (all the good stuff!)

We are now planning on opening our humidor showroom next to the wine room which will feature more humidors than any other store in the UK. Just about something for everyone and every budget from £40 – £4000. Of course most of the humidors we exclusively import to bring our customers the best value for money in the UK as well as ranges that can not be found anywhere else.

I do love it up in Scotland (as long as its not too cold!) in fact I think I’ll spend a week or so at Robert Graham Scotland before Christmas… In the cigar department of course as I’ll leave Ronnie and his Team to advise on the whisky 🙂

The best news of all for me was that our ward winning Dancing Stag range of single malt whisky is now officially our best selling range of whisky across all of our retail Group and our Inka – Secret Blend brand of cigars from Peru is our best selling non Cuban cigars… By a long stretch. Quality, mature tobacco, perfectly constructed and very competitively priced… Who could ask for more?

Its definitely the season for tastings with Turmeaus Liverpool and Turmeaus Chester both holding new world cigar tasting evenings last week featuring Dunhill Aged and Alec Bradley Tempus cigars.

Next Wednesday I’ll be at Robert Graham Cambridge for a cigar and whisky appreciation evening. Last few tickets available for what will be as usual a sold out event.

The new LFDC Gran cano UK regional edition has proved to be a ridiculous success and we are already more or less out of stock and desperately waiting for more stock to arrive from Havana. We have released some of the earlier UK regional editions due to popular deland

Punch Serie D’Oro no.1
La Gloria Cubana Gloriosos
La Flor de Cano Short Robustos

New items ideal for Christmas gifts being added all the time to the online store by Michelle, Laura and Michael. In fact our range has grown so huge we can hardly move in either of our London or Norfolk warehouses!

Partagas Serie D No. 4 - Book Style Cabinet – Cab of 16 Cigars - GreenIf you are a fan of Partagas cigars you should check out this Partagas SD No. 4 book of cigars, superb cigars that I selected from our finest English Market Selection stocks in a beautiful presentation.

Just over two weeks to go before our Vintage Cigar Auction and The Spectator Cigar Smoker of The Year Awards dinner at Boisdale Canary Wharf. Online bidding is now open and closes 24 hours before the auction.

Chatting with Ranald earlier and he mentioned that Charlie Sheen and Sylvester Stallone has been nominated for the award amongst some other great personalities from sport (Julian Dicks) and movies (Alan Greenspan and Marc Sinden) to name a few. Should be an outrageous evening. I hear the Cuban Ambassador will also be at the dinner. Probably last chance to book for the event if not already sold out.

If you can’t make the dinner you can always join us for some fabulous Fuente cigars and the auction.

Have a smokey weekend
