The Caol Ila Distillery is hidden in a quiet cove near Port Askaig on Islay Many consider this locality to be the wildest and most picturesque of the island. Situated near Loch Nam Ban, the site is ideal thanks to the abundant supply of good water. Caol Ila (Gaelic for 'the Sound of Islay') was built in 1846 by Hector Henderson - a Glasgow businessman with a keen interest in distilling. Like Bunnahabhain and Bruichladdich, the development of Caol Ila created along with it, a community of its own.
Deep peppery flavours abound in this seldom available richly satisfying natural cask strength expression. It has all the fresh sea-air aromas and smoky dry peppery flavours of a mature expressive Islay malt. To enjoy a cask strength single malt at its best measure one part whisky to two parts still water at room temperature. Any slight cloudiness that occurs as a result is normal
